ISSUES

Stronger Controls on Illegal Immigration

There are approximately 250,000 illegal immigrants in Maryland.  This number is unacceptable.  We need to control illegal immigration to prevent its dangerous side effects.  The most dangerous result of illegal immigration is the increased health risks to American citizens.  Additionally, I strongly oppose amnesty for illegal immigrants.  Granting amnesty to illegal immigrants will place a huge fiscal burden on the economy.  I want to enforce federal laws that prohibit illegal immigration and introduce legislation that would punish businesses that employ illegal immigrants.

Harsher Penalties for Sex Offenders

There is no excuse for an adult to abuse a child.  First time sex offenders convicted of second degree rape and second degree sex offense should be incarcerated for a mandatory minimum of twenty-five years.  Studies have shown that there is an extremely high recidivism rate for sex offenders.  We need to protect the people who cannot protect themselves.  Putting these criminals behind bars is one-step in the right direction.

Health Care Reform

With an aging population, affordable health care is more important than ever.  I want to work to provide access to affordable heath care to every citizen.  Socialized health care is not the answer.  I am currently researching the newly enacted Massachusetts health law and analyzing how it might benefit Maryland residents.  Please read my blog for further information.  I will also work to provide further medical malpractice tort reform which would bring down the costs of health insurance.

Protection of Private Property Rights

In the Supreme Court case of Kelo v. New London, Justice Stevens held that the generation of "tax-revenue" from private property is considered a "public-use" under the Takings Clause of 5th Amendment.  Ultimately, this decision gives state government's greater discretion in using the eminent domain power to seize your land.  This result is unacceptable.  Eight states, including Maine , Montana , South Carolina , and Kentucky , forbid the use of eminent domain for economic development unless it will eliminate blight.  I will introduce similar legislation that will restrict the state and local government from taking your private property under the eminent domain power.

Greater Access to Concealed Carry Permits

I support a private citizen's right to carry a concealed handgun.  Allowing citizens to carry a concealed handgun reduces crime.  The recent Lott/Mustard Study reinforces my statement.  Nearly 1,500 murders and 4,000 rapes can be prevented each year.  Currently, MD State Police will only issue a permit if they determine an applicant has a "special need.  This "special need" test is too high of a burden to meet and needs to be changed.

Encourage Small Business Development

As the son of a small business owner, I understand the important role that small businesses play in the community.  Recent legislation proves that Maryland is not business friendly.  With the recent veto override of the Wal-Mart bill and an increase in minimum wage, Maryland continues to discourage business owners from moving to the state.  I will work to reform workers compensation and unemployment insurance.  I will also work for more tort reform to prevent business owners from being the victims of frivolous lawsuits.

Fiscal Conservative & Limited Government

I am a strong fiscal conservative.  I believe the government can be more responsible and accountable with our money.  Excessive government spending leads to excessive taxation.  Marylanders can no longer afford to allow government spending go unchecked.  We need to reduce the tax burden on the working family and make the government work for us.

Education

Citizens of the United States are now competing in a global marketplace.  Education should be one of our top priorities.  Any efforts to increase the quality of our education system should be thoroughly analyzed and implemented.  I believe Anne Arundel County needs an additional public high school to alleviate overcrowding problems.  Overcrowding reduces the effectiveness of the classroom.  I encourage more parent involvement with the school system.  Parents should help reinforce the importance of a good quality education.  I will propose additional mandatory classes that high school seniors need to take.  Specifically, I believe our children should graduate with a better understanding of how to manage finances and the growing financial market of America .  I will look into implementing a "financial acumen" class that will teach seniors practical understanding of our state's complex financial system.

Traditional Family Values

As a person of faith, I believe we should maintain and support our nation's core principles.  Family values are at the heart of these principles.  I am pro-life.  I believe it is our job to protect the sanctity of life.

Environmental Conservationist

Theodore Roosevelt has always been one of my heroes.  As a strong conservationist, I respect him for his stance on the environment.  He understood the importance of protecting the environment and preserving the wildlife.  I will work to implement reasonable and responsible environmental controls in Maryland
